The Race to Become King and Queen of the Mountain Returns to Ben Lomond

Launceston Mountain Bike Club announces the return of a unique challenge at Ben Lomond – open to all cyclists

The Launceston Mountain Bike Club (LMBC) is excited to announce the return of the King and Queen of the Mountain race on Sunday 16 February 2025. This unique 17.7km gravel road race will challenge cyclists with a stunning, uphill course that climbs 1050m of elevation to the top of Ben Lomond – on the highest road in Tasmania.

Riders will take on one of the most incredible cycling routes in the state, winding through eucalyptus bushland, navigating Australia’s largest boulder field, tackling the six hairpin turns of Jacob’s Ladder, and eventually reaching the alpine plateau of Tasmania’s largest alpine area. The race ends at Ben Lomond’s alpine ski village, offering a rare opportunity to ride on the highest road in the state.

“This is not your average race,” said Matt Patten, Race Director for the Launceston Mountain Bike Club. “The King and Queen of the Mountain race is an unforgettable challenge, not only for the incredible views and variety of terrain but for the sense of achievement that comes with conquering such a unique course. From the lush bushland to the rugged alpine environment, this race is truly one of a kind in Australia.”

The race will begin at Ben Lomond Base, a business owned by Ben Lomond Alpine Resort, where riders and spectators can take part in pre and post race celebrations. Refreshments and a BBQ will be available at their Base Café to fuel riders after their challenging ascent.

The Prizes

Howell Property Group has again committed to sponsoring the event, offering $500 cash prizes for the first male and first female across the line, as well as $300 cash prizes for the first male and first female in both the Juniors and Masters (40+) categories. The first 10 entrants from each Tasmanian mountain bike club will receive free entries, making it even easier for club members to join in on this epic challenge.

Participants will experience the exhilaration of racing through some of Tasmania’s most breathtaking landscapes, from the dense bushland and striking boulder fields to the challenging hairpin bends of Jacob’s Ladder and the wide-open alpine plateau. The final push to the summit will test riders’ endurance and skill, making it a true achievement for those who cross the finish line.

Last year, Richie Porte, the Australian former professional road cyclist, and Tour de France podium finalist, claimed the title King of the Mountain after an outstanding victory in the men’s race. His performance was a highlight of the 2024 event, and with strong community support and an exciting competitive atmosphere, the 2025 race promises to be a fantastic challenge for all participants.

With 8 weeks to go, now is the time to start training for this challenging and rewarding race. Whether you’re a road cyclist, mountain biker, or gravel rider, the King and Queen of the Mountain offers a chance to test yourself in one of Tasmania’s most spectacular settings.
