Why You Need Snow Chains
From 1 June to 30 September, it is a legal requirement to carry snow chains when driving up the mountain. But don’t worry — you’ll only need to fit them if road conditions call for it.
National Parks and Wildlife Rangers will let you know — either in person or through signage — if and when to put your chains on.
When and Where to Fit Chains
- Collect chains at Base
Pick up your snow chains and learn how to fit them before starting your drive. We recommend watching our tutorial video — and downloading it — since there’s no mobile signal further up the mountain. - Look for signs at the fitting bay
If you see a “Chains Required” sign, pull over in the designated area and fit your chains. - Drive safely to the summit
With your chains fitted, continue up the mountain and enjoy the incredible views at Jacob’s Ladder. - Keep chains on for the return drive
You’ll need your chains on for the descent as well. Please don’t remove them until you’re off the alpine road.
How to Fit Chains – (Chain Fitting Video)
- Fit chains to both driving wheels (e.g., front wheels for front-wheel drive vehicles).
- Not sure which wheels are your driving wheels? Check your car manual.
- Lay out the chains and untangle any kinks before starting
- Drape the chains over the wheels and connect the inside fastener first
- Next connect the outer latch on the outside of the wheel, and tighten it using the ratchet
- Drive forwards a couple of meters, check chains and retighten before driving off again
- If you forget how to fit them, there are instructions on the front of the chain bag.
Look After Your Chains
