DRIVE
JACOBS LADDER
Six dramatic hairpin bends. Towering dolerite cliffs. One of Tasmania's most memorable mountain drives.
THE ROAD IS PART OF THE ADVENTURE
Climbing towards the Ben Lomond plateau, Jacobs Ladder winds through immense boulder fields beneath towering dolerite columns. The road's tight bends and dramatic mountain backdrop make the journey unforgettable.
The drive is steep, narrow and unsealed. It's an experience to enjoy slowly, with full attention on the road and room for other vehicles. Once you're safely parked in a permitted area, take time to appreciate the alpine landscape.

A NEW VIEW OVER JACOBS LADDER
A new accessible walkway, viewing platform and crow's nest are being built above Jacobs Ladder. When opened, visitors will be able to enjoy panoramic views towards the Ford River Valley, the dramatic mountain landscape and the winding road below.
The upgraded Watchtower Lookout is part of Tasmania's investment in Ben Lomond as a year-round destination.
Parks Tasmania advises that the Watchtower lookout and walkway are closed for replacement works from 13 April to 27 November 2026. Reopening is subject to confirmation. Please check the official park alerts before travelling.

Jacobs Ladder is one of Tasmania's most memorable mountain drives, with spectacular views, dramatic dolerite cliffs and winding bends that make the journey part of the Ben Lomond experience. Take your time, enjoy the scenery and follow a few simple road guidelines along the way.
TAKE YOUR TIME
Enjoy the scenic climb at the posted 30 km/h speed limit. Slow down whenever conditions require and take in the spectacular mountain scenery.
SHARE THE ROAD
Jacobs Ladder is a narrow mountain road. Uphill vehicles give way to descending traffic. Follow the road signs and allow plenty of room around bends.
STOP FOR THE VIEWS
Enjoy sweeping views from designated viewing areas, including the new Watchtower Lookout once it opens. Avoid stopping or walking on the road itself.
Visiting June to September? Parks Tasmania requires vehicles to carry correctly fitting snow chains during these months. Conditions may require chains to be fitted, and the road can close at short notice. Snow chain hire is available at Ben Lomond Base, not at the alpine village.

MORE THAN A SCENIC DRIVE
Ben Lomond is remarkable beyond the switchbacks. Summer brings open alpine landscapes, striking rock formations and opportunities to explore on designated walking tracks.
Mountain weather can change quickly. Bring suitable clothing, water and sun protection, and check Parks Tasmania for current track and lookout access. Some areas may be closed for maintenance.

Can I drive Jacobs Ladder in a normal car?
Many roadworthy vehicles can use the road in favourable conditions, but Jacobs Ladder is steep, narrow and unsealed. Suitability depends on your vehicle, tyres, driver confidence and current conditions. Check official road advice before travelling.
How long does it take to reach Jacobs Ladder?
